French onion soup is one of the most famous in the world, but its full potential is often overlooked. It has an excellent dish for a family dinner or a conclusion or to a meeting the night. Topped with fresh grated gruyere and crispy sourdough bread, the rich broth and sweet onion rings make a substantial meal. Everything need to add is a fresh green salad and a dessert of fresh fruit. This recipe is served as a casserole. Let it brew a pot unattended ovenware until ready for last-minute garnish.
Ingredients
6 large yellow onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter or margarine
1 tablespoon olive oil
6 cups freshly cooked or canned beef broth
Port 1 / 3 cup white or red or dry red wine (optional)
Sal and pepper to taste
Method
 • Use a heavy bottom 3 or 4 quarters covered pan.
 • Saute onions in butter and oil until limp.
 • Cover and simmer for 15 minutes.
 • Pour the meat stock or broth and wine (if desired) and cook simmer for 30 minutes.
 • Or place in a pan of ovenware in a slow oven (300th) for 1 hour.
• A Taste and add salt and pepper if necessary.
 • Makes about 1 1/2quarts or 6 servings.
A Serving suggestion:
 • Serve the soup the dishes from the pan or pour into a bowl and then serve in individual bowls.
 • Top each serving with a slice of butter, dry toast French.
 • To prepare, slice French bread 1 / 2 inch thick, place on a baking sheet and dry in a moderately slow oven -325 degrees 20 to 25 minutes or until lightly toasted.
 • Sprinkle each round of toast and grated Gruyere or Parmesan cheese and additional grated cheese pas at the table.

Could you provide some basic phrases in French to make myself understood in French-speaking community. You know, like greetings, asking for food, directions, Where does the train / bus to get out of X? etc. A million thanks to all! I'm not staying for long there, but I think it is polite to try to speak for at least the basics so you do not feel I'm reaching around with my bad English btw, thanks to P date
