Although it's been a couple of years since I studied Spanish in Guatemala, I credit that experience makes me a beginner level oxidized to fluency. Fluency is a term too vague and in fact can be applied to different skill levels ranging from high intermediate to native speaker ability. Although there was studied Spanish in more than 20 years, for some reason, everything came back to me when I studied again at age 40 in Guatemala. After 8 weeks, I I felt very confident as a speaker of Spanish and relatively smooth.
Here are some of the reasons we have identified for success in a program Spanish Immersion Language:
- Attitude: I was in, that Spanish is quite easy and I had absolutely no doubt that I, with hard work, progress rapidly. To tell you the truth, this is probably the most important factor. I say this as both student and teacher of foreign language.
- I was a pro-active students. My teachers were not really trained in foreign language teaching and learning. If it goes too fast, for example, spoke and asked me to practice: oral practice.
- I studied grammar and writing paper made the exercises outside of class. Time class was to listen and speak.
- My teacher did not speak English, and home-stay family spoke no English.
- I read a lot in Spanish, the choice of books and magazines with topics of personal interest, to a level just above mine.
- Outside of class, I talked all the time with my family host, other students, on the street, on the market.
- At my request, my teacher corrected me after I finished speaking. Correction should not interrupt the flow of thought and expression.
- After my 8 weeks of study, I was in Latin America for 8 months and really consolidated what I had learned to real life practice. Not everyone can do. But you can join the club spoke in Spanish, classes, organizations Spanish use, and you can find partners to help.
So there you have it. Anyone can do it. The Spanish language is one of the easiest for English speaking people. Get rid of any self-defeating negative beliefs about their capacity and half the battle is won.
In retrospect, I recommend you study at home as much as possible before embarking on their journey of total immersion.

I really want to go to a French speaking country during the summer and take an immersion course. It would be great to be a place with small classes that have some social activities too.
