TEACH YOURSELF BASIC FRENCH QUOTES | "Bonjour" – "Bonsoir" – "Bonne nuit":

Bonjour (Bohn-zhoor)

Hello / Good morning

Say "Bonjour" when you are first meeting someone that day. Traditionally, one might say "Bonjour" only if it is still light, but sometimes is used only if it is strictly before 6:00 pm. You can simply say "Bonjour" or you can add a title or customizing others later.

For example, "Bonjour" is totally acceptable and can be expected for someone to answer back with a mutual "Bonjour". You could also say, "Bonjour mon ami." That means "Hello my friend. "Or you can say," Bonjour Monsieur / Madame / Mademoiselle ", which means," Hello Mr., Mrs. or Miss "

Note: Remember that additional customization comes after the word "Bonjour", not before. Say, "Bonjour Monsieur" would be incorrect. Add the Mr, Mrs or Miss to anyone you do not know. That bears repeating. It is part of French culture to add the Mr., Mrs. or Miss after the "Bonjour" if you do not know the person. Being the exception of an older person to a much younger generation. However, if an older person is speaking to a member of the distinguished person even when they are younger, then add Mr, Mrs, or Miss is considered appropriate and rude not to.
